T.E. Lawrence explains how Dream Activist has created an online community and utilized social networking tools to create awareness in an effort to help undocumented students achieve the American Dream.

Every year, thousands of undocumented students graduate from college and high school. Most people in the United States are unaware of this growing group and their everyday struggles for the American Dream. In the same vein, many of the undocumented students do not know what the DREAM Act is and what they can do to help its passage.

The federal DREAM Act (S.729 / H.R. 1751) will provide undocumented immigrant youth in the United States with conditional residency and a pathway to citizenship provided they came here before the age of 16 and maintained continuous residence for 5 years, graduate from high school or obtain a GED, attend 2 years of college or join the military and have no criminal records.

If Congress fails to act this year, another entire class of outstanding, law-abiding high school students will graduate without being able to plan for the future, and some will be removed from their homes to countries they barely know. This tragedy will cause America to lose a vital asset: an educated class of promising immigrant students who have demonstrated a commitment to hard work and a strong desire to be contributing members of our society.

The key words are links and community. The United States of America is a large community. Unfortunately, many individuals and organizations are like little islands. Isolated, they face a political climate that is every day more hostile to immigrants in general.

After the defeat of the DREAM Act in 2007, several undocumented students from around the country decided to come together and launch a real grassroots efforts for the DREAM Act that included both online and offline networking. The principles and foundations of DREAMACTivist.org are cataloged here.

The goal was to be actively organize for the DREAM Act and make sure that the bill would not go down in defeat again. In the Change.org Ideas for Change in America competition, we garnered 12,000 votes, which at the time, was the most support drawn by a promigrant cause online. It also helped generate a lot of positive vibe and momentum for the DREAM Act in 2009.

We followed this up with a petition effort that collects testimonials and endorsements, and in one month, has collected 11,000 signatures, including 250 organizational endorsements.

Seeing these efforts online, in December 2008, we were appointed as the national communication center for the United We DREAM coalition of over 40 different organizations (both beltway, educators, and student groups) dedicated to the passage of the DREAM Act.

Through social networking and online media, we have built a student-led, non-racist movement for the DREAM Act that incorporates a diversity of voices. Working as part of the national movement for the DREAM Act, DreamActivist.org now serves as the national link between student groups and larger beltway organizations.

Through the use of tools like Network for Good and Chip In, we have been able to raise money to fund this movement.

We do community workshops, help get new student groups organized, run major DREAM Act social networks and communities such as Change.org, Causes and Twitter, network with existing student groups, distribute materials, run a toll-free line to help undocumented students and immigrant parents, lobby Congress, generate awareness for the DREAM Act in our own communities, handle media work for the United We DREAM Coalition, and organize for change from the bottom-up.

All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible -  T.E. Lawrence

I’m crossing my finger to this. I really want to graduate. Going to school one class per semester is not going to speed up this process. It’s hard paying for school in full and work for less than a minimum wage. I could use some financial aid and loans. =/

DREAMActivist deserves this money. The level of work that they do is unbelievable and they have supported the vast number of student groups throughout the nation that are concerned for the DREAM Act. DREAMActivist helps point us in the right direction and helps unify us under one powerful voice. To award this money to DREAMActivist is to support the thousands of students who are depending on them to be their voice and leader in this struggle for equality. The success of the DREAM Act this year would be in large part due to the tireless efforts and zealous work of the folks at DREAMActivist.

There is no organization more deserving of this grant than Dream Activist. This organization has been very active and is constantly acting to make people aware of the injustice of preventing undocumented students from attending a college of university in the United States. It seems they are fueled by their passion to make education a human right. People who support the Dream Act are whole heartedly concern about these vulnerable children who would benefit from the Dream Act. We have a social responsibility as a nation to be concern about all members of our society, and undocumented students are contributing members of our society.

I think the Dream Act should be supported and passed in the United States. We are not allowing many young people access to an education that could help them to contirbute their talents and skills to our nation. So many of these young immigrants did not make the choice to come to the United States. Yet they are the ones who are held back from pursuing laudable goals because of the red tape around immigration issues. I say a college education should be made available to all who are willing to pursue that life path. Dream on for fair immigration laws protecting a population of people who are victimizied on a daily basis!

This cause is very close to my heart. I am first generation born in the US, to parents who came here in search of a better life. My father with a 2nd grade education, my mom with a 7th grade, eventually built their own company. Through their hard work and perseverance I was able to surpass even my own expectations, to obtain Master’s degree.

There are many families like mine who may loose what we all take forgranted – education, opportunities, equality. This great country was built by and for immigrants. DREAM ACTIVIST 2009 reminds us of this very fact, and therefore deserves this grant.

I believe that everyone deserves an opportunity to be something. Its really heartbreaking to see these young kids who are scholars all throughout highschool, and then are denied the chance to a higher education and are left with nothing!
They cant get drivers license, they cant get a good job! What are they to do. They have lived here for a long time, most since they were babies, and this is now their home. Most of them have not returned to their homeland, and know nothing of it. How are we suppose to send them packing back if all they know is their home here in the US. It is unfair for them who did not have a say in their parents actions. EVERYONE DESERVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACHIEVE AND BE SUCCESSFUL!!!!

When I see what the DREAMers have been able to accomplish despite all the odds against them, I know that these are the future leaders, innovaters, and entrepreneurs who are going to change the world. All they are asking for is an opportunity to show what they can. I invite you to visit the immigration blog at change.org to hear their stories…find out for yourself just how brilliant and accomplished these students are. Then join us by lobbying for passage of the DREAM Act in 2009! Thank you.

DramActivist.org is not only a place that provides the general public with very valuable information. It’s not only a website that is utilized to both educate and mobilize youth, allies, parents, educators, entire families who seek a better life in this country, it also represents HOPE. Many have expressed how before they became aware of DreamActivist.org they had no hope to continue with their education, to continue fighting for what is right and what is valuable. Dream Activist represent the hope that there is in fact a light at the end of the tunnel. Many have been inspired to do “on the ground” organizing and for that and more DreamActivist.org deserves to be given these funds.

    Please vote for DreamActivist.org!!!

I personally know someone who would benefit from the Dream Act, and if its passage allows just him to remain in the US, it will have been worth it. He is a brilliant scholar, conscientious community servant, and totally the kind of person we want in our society. He’s been here since he was 3 when his parents legally entered the US. The US is the only home he knows. His siblings are all citizens by their birthright. Someone actually suggested that he should have deported himself when he turned 18.

Deporting this fine y0ung man serves no one’s interest and would be a travesty of justice.

I been supporting the Dream Act since I was in High School. I t has been hard but this year has to be different because we the teenagers will make the change. This is why is very important to go to the march this friday May 1. I am a volunteer in Asociacion Tepeyac and this year will go to support the Dream Act because we have a feeling that this year everything will change. We as teenagers should not give up! we should keep fighting for what we want. We should start by taking the lead this friday and let know the Congress that we are the future and that they should not be afraid of a change. Leadership is the key word and we the teenagers have to make it happen. Lets become leaders and go to the march this friday so we can change our future for a better one.

The Dream Act is more vital today than ever. This country needs hard working people who are getting their education and striving to make their communities a better place. Such passion, ambition, desire and talent would be a crime to waste. And the Dream Act would provide the long awaited justice that so many have given their everything to receive.

All great things come from humble beginnings. The Dream Act embodies the above statement in more ways than just one. There is no other organization more deserving of this grant than the Dream Act. The Dream Act shows how a small group of people can start a movement to find justice. It is because of this that the Dream Act deserves this money more than anyone else. The movement is just getting started and it will continue to grow until EVERYONE has an equal right to an education.

As Senator Durbin once said, “Give these kids a chance!”

I fully support the DREAM Act and the bright students it would benefit. It is unfair for them and for the American people to be hiding in the shadows when they could be contributing tax payers to this country. We have already invested in their education; we need to see this investment pay off. Pass the DREAM Act!
