InvisiblePeople.tv

Fifteen years ago I was a TV executive. Fourteen years ago I ended up homeless on Hollywood Blvd. I now am 14 years sober and am rebuilding my life but homelessness is once again a very real possibility. I lost my job in St Louis over a year ago. I took a job here in Los Angeles, moved here, and was laid off. I lost my house to foreclosure last week.

With $45, a small camera and a laptop I started http://invisiblepeople.tv, a homeless awareness vlog. I had to do something.

Every week I take a few minutes to get to know a different person without a home. I learn how they survive, how they came to find themselves homeless, and who they call friends. I ask them about their biggest wishes, their greatest hardships and their plans for the future.

Then, I introduce them to the world via social media. My video blog is a testament of the character and strength of people living on America’s streets. It gives them a voice and a chance to tell their story and become more than a coat sleeping on a park bench.

To get the word out about my vblog, I began using twitter, @hardlynormal and have more than 6,500 posts about the cause. I use it as my primary strategy of outreach, and as of April 2, I have 1,660 followers. I use it to connect to volunteers, to figure out where to buy raincoats, to get support for homeless children, to connect to resources and even to get traffic shortcuts.

I have been interviewed by John Lawlor on blogtalkradio.com, http://www.blogtalkradio.com/OnlineStrategist/2008/12/23/Mark-Horvath-SocialMedialogy-Conversations about my use of social media, and have a press release on http://pitch.pe/4732. I was also featured on a story about breaking social media rules; http://mashable.com/2009/03/10/breaking-social-media-rules/.

All of these social media tools are used in my efforts to raise the money needed to continue this important work. Right now I do not have the right equipment I need, and it is important to travel more because the homeless crisis is not isolated to Los Angeles.

UPDATE:

Currently I am in real crisis living without income trying to survive this economic nightmare. Thanks to the huge hearts of a few generous people I am making it day by day! But I am not asking for donations!

On invisiblepeople.tv you will not find a visible donation link. I simply want you to remember that the homeless people ignored today were much like the rest of us not very long ago.

Yesterday I saw a group of school kids making fun of an older chronic homeless man who was just trying to wave hello. If these kids took the time to hear his story or were exposed to the knowledge that homeless are real people I don’t think they would have acted so ignorantly.

Last night while stopped at a red light I watched people walk past a homeless person sleeping on the sidewalk. They would approach consciously ignoring the homeless person looking straight ahead. Each person as they got closer would glance down to the body and quickly look back up. No one stopped. No one paid any real attention. It could have even been a dead body or someone seriously injured. What I do know is that each person for one brief second when they looked at the homeless person felt something. But they did not act!

My hope is that when you meet the people on invisiblepeople.tv you won’t ignore your heart and you will take some kind of action to make our world better.

I love what Mark is doing, especially on Twitter and InvisiblePeople.tv. He’s not letting us forget about the realities of homelessness. Mark reminds us all how thin the line is between the well-off executive and that person sleeping on the sidewalk and does it in a practical, pro-active way. He puts names & stories to the thousands of faces effected by homelessness in this country and that’s proof of Mark’s big heart and his desire to raise awareness for an issue many of us turn a blind eye to.

The invisiblepeople.tv project is a powerful way to expose people outside of the homeless services sector to the experiences of the unhoused. The site has received wide readership and has the potential to get people thinking about solving homelessness who otherwise would not have a way to initially engage the issue.

    Hello Mark,
I’m very sorry for what happened to you but I guess you’re a winner and your idea to let people know about homeless condition is one of the best things you’ve made in your life, believe me. I’m a friend of many homeless here in Rome, and I try to hear them and make a smile ‘cos I know ho they feel frustrated and alone, after having a nice life years ago and ended up this appaling way… I hope you can reach as many people as possible and succeed in your fantastic aim. Good luck!

I have many sweet events from contacts with homeless people. After greeting a rather dirty, limping man on Union, he asked me for a quarter. The $1.50 in hand was for the bus I was rushing to catch & I hesitated a moment before giving it to him. At the stop, I was rummaging thru my backpack to find some cash & looked up to see him limping towards me with hand in the air. He was trying to give it back as he was worried I didn’t have enough for the bus. I’m still touched by our loving exchange w/ each other.

I was once perceived as being homeless and see me and immediately look away. They did not want to acknowledge me or my situation. I didn’t try to correct their impression, and the scene only lasted the length of a bus ride. But it drove home the point that homeless people are invisible to the larger public. Mark has done a great service by giving those people who are so regularly ignored or disdained a voice and opportunity to tell their story. Not all the stories are pretty or sympathetic, but they are authentic. And I think they push the viewer to question their own perceptions and actions. Are we seeing clearly enough, and are we doing enough?

What a powerful, moving undertaking. It’s too easy today to cast others aside. I hope this helps many people pause and realize that many people’s problems are not simply black and white and that we all need to work together. I hope the mainstream media catches on soon and uses their overabundance of airtime to broadcast something worthy.

Mark does a fantastic job taking an almost overwhelming subject, and breaking it down into real people and their stories. This approach has a big impact. Especially from people I’ve talked to in smaller towns around the US who might not see the level of homelessness we see here in LA, it makes it more real and at the same time less intimidating. (i.e., wow, I could help that ONE person, no problem! vs. How can I help 90k homeless people in LA?). Big fan of Mark’s @invisiblepeople and @hardlynormal on Twitter. If you see other great ideas like Mark’s, please share @CharityIdeas so I can pass along too. Mark, keep doing what you’re doing!

Great work, i live and work with the homeless and addicted, (the fourth world) in Bradford England. it’s so true, everyone is just a few paychecks away from homelessness, we too see so many pass by and not meet the need of the homeless around them. Please God, cause people in our nation to not only see but to help in practical ways, with finances, with time to volunteer and with their gifts. Its hard to keep up our spirits when so many pass by. Keep it up we will though. God is our only help much of the time when on the streets and Often God is our onlyhelp when trying to help those who need it the most in our own society.

Mark is a great guy doing some great work at utilizing Social Media platforms to bring wide spread awareness to a problem with out easy answers.

But by raising the level of awareness and bringing the stories out he can really begin to help us all realize the need to help people who are homeless.

Mark is doing an amazing job with invisible.tv. Besides that he is a great storyteller I noticed since the moment I met him online.

  • Melynda Hilliard // April 8, 2009 at 3:30 pm | Reply

Mark not only brings a face to the invisible people but he also brings friendship. I’ve heard many stories of his “peeps” who aren’t just people he’s met and 2 days later forgotten, they are his friends. He thinks about his friends and strives to find them help in any way that he can.

What a lot of people don’t realize (or don’t want to realize) is that friendship can be the one thing that keeps people going another day. It can be the inspiration to ask questions, to find the right help, to strive for something more. It can also be the one thing that gives a person back their dignity.

My hat goes off to you Mark. Thank you for the work you are doing and bringing awareness to all of us.

Often, people think it’s easier (and maybe emotionally it is) to look past a homeless person–pretend they don’t see them. The mentality is, ignore them and they’ll go away. But each person on the street is someone’s friend, brother, father, son. Great work, thanks for sharing it with the rest of us.

I, for one, am so glad he wasn’t content to just find freedom himself but has now become one of the loudest voices for those still trapped there. Wishing more people could see your work/website/programs, and expand their understanding of who’s homeless and why, and get creative about solutions. I see the negative reactions of some Seattle bus riders after 9pm, when the homeless make their way to the northside shelter(s) with their belongings. The homeless person is someone’s former coworker, fellow soldier, neighbor, classmate, etc.

They say, “it takes one to know one.” Unfortunately, when it comes to the homeless, so many that never imagined they would know homelessness are today living on the street. Thank you for enduring the experience of being homeless, yet choosing to shed light on this plight rather than run away and never look back. Through your ministry and God’s providence, may we all come to know that people are people and God loves and cares for each of them and calls upon us to do the same.
